Over time, more and more volumes of data are generated and the technique for analyzing and extracting value information from them is also refined.

The speed with which this data is generated is also increasing, and this is stated by a study by Allianz Global Investors that says that more than 90% of the data that exist in the world has been created in a couple of years , specifically, in the last two years. Allianz Global Investors says the Big Data revolution is just beginning and is already changing the way problems are seen and solved.

In 2025, 10 times more data will be recorded

According to an analysis by Seagate and IDC the world is undergoing a fundamental change, from self-driving cars to robots, and from smart personal assistants to home automation devices, all of which transforms the way you live and work.

And with that change, data has become essential in all aspects of human life over the past 30 years. They have changed the way people learn and entertain theself, they are the soul of digital existence. This digital existence, defined by the sum of all data created, captured and replicated across the globe, is growing very rapidly.

According to the report, by 2025 more than 163ZB of data will have been created worldwide, a data that will be 10 times higher than in 2016.

Opportunities already seem limitless, as do the large volume of data that will create a wide variety of connected devices and services. From power grids and water systems to hospitals, public transport and road networks, the growth of real-time data is notable for its volume and criticality as data is a vital element for the smooth functioning of all aspects of everyday life, for consumers, governments and for businesses alike.

In fact, IDC estimates that by 2025, nearly 20% of the global data% will be critical to everyday life, and nearly 10 of these will be highly critical.

Embedded systems

In previous periods, data growth was largely due to the rise of personal computers and the consumption of digital entertainment. But today there are more consumer devices (PCs, smartphones, game consoles and music players) than humans, and all these devices need data to be able to operate.

Today, the number of embedded system devices that power data centers is less than one per person worldwide, but over the next 10 years, that number will increase to more than four devices per person. All these integrated devices generate large amounts of data, which in turn will allow to refine and improve systems and processes in previously unimaginable ways, and that will feed the growth and value of Big Data applications and metadata, an example of that would be Netflix.

According to the IDC study, by 2025, the embedded data will constitute almost 20% of all the data created. Productivity data comes from a set of traditional computing platforms such as PCs, servers, phones, and tablets, instead, embedded data comes from a wide variety of device types, including security cameras, Chip cards, RFID readers, smart infrastructure, cars, boats, airplanes, digital signage, wearables, etc…

All of these embedded devices will radically increase the level of person’s interaction with data, changing the user experience. According to IDC, the average per capita rate of data-driven interactions per day is expected to increase 20 times over the next 10 years as homes, workplaces, appliances, vehicles, and wearables become enabling.

Mobile data and real time

These increases in connectivity place a premium on mobile access and real-time responses. The number of people connected worldwide grew five fold between 2005 and 2015. During the same period, the use of mobile phones exceeded the use of the Internet via PC. By 2025, connected users will make up 75% of the world’s population, including previously unconnected groups such as toddlers, the elderly and people in emerging markets.

Mobile data and real-time data both show strong growth in the coming years, according to IDC. Increasingly, data will need to be instantly available whenever and wherever someone needs it. Industries around the world are undergoing a “digital transformation” driven by these requirements. By 2025, more than a quarter of the data created worldwide will be in real time, and% real-time IoT data will account for more than 95 of this.

Artificial Intelligence Systems

The amount and availability of data allows a new set of technologies, such as machine learning, natural language processing, and Artificial Intelligence (collectively known as cognitive systems) to convert the data analysis of a retrospective practice in a proactive driver of strategic decision-making and action.

IDC estimates that by 2025, two-thirds of global financial firms will integrate third-party cognitive data to improve the customer experience through product and service offerings and fraud protection.

Seagate CEO Steve Luczo said that “the opportunity for today’s businesses and tomorrow’s entrepreneurs to capture the value of data is tremendous, and our global business leaders will be exploring these opportunities for decades.”

Cognitive systems can significantly increase the frequency, flexibility, and immediacy of data analysis across a range of industries, circumstances, and applications. IDC estimates that the amount of the global data sphere under data analysis will grow by a factor of 50 to 5.2ZB by 2025, and the amount of data analyzed that is “marked” by cognitive systems will grow by a factor of 100 to 1.4ZB by 2025.

The report also notes that automation and machine-to-machine (M2M) technologies will make data creation show a departure from traditional sources. While data creation over the past 10 years has been primarily characterized by an increase in entertainment content, the next decade will reflect the shift in productivity.

Safety as a critical thing

Changes in data sources, usage, and the value and amount of data being created are changing the fact that data is consumer-driven to business-driven. In 2015, companies created less than 30% of the data, while this figure will be almost 60% in 2025.

All this data from new sources opens up new vulnerabilities to private and sensitive information. There is a significant gap between the amount of data that is produced today that requires security and the amount of data that is actually being secured, and this gap will widen.
